A la même date, la plateforme VirginMega met en vente 200.000 morceaux au format MP3 sans DRM (digital rights management), pour favoriser la vente de la musique en ligne. La Fnac fait de même sur sa plateforme FnacMusic, avec 150.000 morceaux sans DRM. En mai 2007, Amazon annonce son intention d’ouvrir une plateforme de musique sans DRM dans le courant de l’année. EMI Music passe des partenariats avec VirginMega (effectif à la mi-mai 2007), Apple (accord en mars 2007, effectif fin mai 2007), Amazon (accord en mai 2007, effectif plus tard) et diverses plateformes scandinaves pour la distribution de son catalogue sans DRM au prix de 1,29 euros le morceau (au lieu de 0,99 euros avec DRM).
